Keeping your home clean and germ free is so important if you want to protect your family’s health. As long as you give the home a good clean once a week or so, you should be able to get rid of most of the germs and bacteria. However, there are some areas of the home that people often forget about, and so bacteria is left to grow and spread and that could put you at risk. These are some of the hidden sources of bacteria that you miss when cleaning your home.
Refrigerator
Your refrigerator is constantly filled with lots of different food items and when they start to go bad, they will release a lot of bacteria. Raw meats also have a lot of dangerous bacteria on, which can easily make you sick, which is why it’s so important that you keep your refrigerator clean. If you don’t, bacteria will get onto your fresh food and you risk getting ill. You should always clear the refrigerator out and wipe down the shelves with some antibacterial cleaner every few weeks at least, if not more. Make sure that you manage your food well so you can use things up before they go bad as well.
HVAC Units
An HVAC unit is supposed to keep the air clean and ensure a constant flow of fresh air, but if your HVAC unit is old and poorly maintained, it may be doing the opposite. Over time, the filters inside the unit will get clogged with dirt and bacteria, and in some cases, mold may start growing. All of this bacteria is then released back into the air where you will breathe it in and it can make you sick. It’s important that you get an HVAC company to come in and maintain your unit so it is always clean and it is not releasing bacteria into your home. A well maintained HVAC unit will actually help to remove bacteria from the air, so make sure that you look after yours.
Washing Machines
Washing machines are another appliance that people often forget to clean properly. It’s easy to assume that they clean themselves, but that isn’t the case at all. In fact, the inner workings of older washing machines are often covered with limescale and mold. When you wash your clothes, they will not actually be very clean and they will be covered with bacteria. It’s important that you replace old appliances when they have reached the end of their natural lifestyle, and make sure that you use a washing machine cleaner on a regular basis.
Light Switches
Light switches are often missed when we clean our homes, and that’s a problem because they are incredibly dirty. They’re being touched over and over by everybody in the house, which means that they’re a big source of bacteria and they need to be cleaned. Giving them a quick wipe down every time you clean will help to stop the spread of bacteria around your home.
If you miss these areas when you are cleaning, your home will not be anywhere near as clean as you think it is.
