While the exterior of the property at the front is a way to communicate what’s inside, when you are trying to make the outside of your property pop, maybe it’s time to go towards the rear? When you are looking to make your home a bit more personable, or summery, a patio is the best way to invoke a more relaxed sensation. Also, if you’re trying to make a new hub of the home, a patio could very well usurp the kitchen. But, how can we turn the patio into the hub of our home.

Address The Purpose

A patio doesn’t have to be for garden parties; it could be somewhere for you to relax and gather your thoughts. Perhaps you have a family that doesn’t spend much time together so you want the place to be a grand setting for great gatherings. Decide what your purpose is first, and then ensure that you decorate it accordingly. The great thing about having a blank canvas is that there are little ways to give it a makeover. Making sure that it functions as the type of patio that you want is the goal. A lot of people like the idea of a party all because they can eat outside, but if the weather seldom works in their favor, will this go to waste? Address the purpose first, then the practicalities.

Pick Your Style

It’s so easy for us to try and overshadow the aesthetics of the property. But we’ve got to think long into the future. When we are thinking about selling up, if the back garden, and specifically, the patio doesn’t go with the aesthetics, this could very well prove to be a problem. You’ve always got to pick your style, but ensure that it matches the property. Also, when you start to look at the practicalities of a new style, think about your budget, and where you want to take it. If you live in an area that is prone to a lot of rain, for example, are you going to waste a lot of money on laying expensive tiles that will soon wash away? It’s important to discuss this with a professional. Companies like Renewal by Andersen Window Replacement can help, especially when you need to make alterations to the back of the property, such as by adding a conservatory that sticks out of the back. Replacing the windows can help to reinvigorate the back of the property, but if the back and the front look like polar opposites, this could cause a muddling of styles. Choose one style, and see it through.

What Do You Want To See?

As nice as it is to have an incredibly stylish patio, you want to have the garden to match it as well. Look at the space, and if there is anything else you can do to complement the patio. When you have an expansive back garden, it’s far easier to play with the space and compartmentalize it. For example, you can have one area that has decking which lends itself well to things like barbecues. But also, think about the grass. Do you want to be looking at something like turf, which doesn’t necessarily look very vibrant, although it is practical? We can spend a long time working on the patio and fixing up the style, but we’ve got to look outwards as well. It’s very easy to dress up a garden for cheap, by installing plants and greenery. But if you’re trying to stay away from the more natural look, perhaps consider laying down rugs. When setting up a patio, you’ve got to decide whether you are bringing the inside components outwards, or vice versa. If you want the party or to be an outside version of your living room, this is when you will make significant changes to the style. Installing rugs, and patio furniture with warming and chunky materials will help you go the distance. But when it comes to furniture you have to be aware of how weather proof proof they are. There are companies that provide very soft furnishings that are weather durable, but also soft.

The patio is an anomaly in the modern home. If you get it right, it could be a logical extension of the home, but if you get it wrong, it sticks out like a sore thumb, and will soon get beaten by the weather. Ensuring that you turn the patio into the hub of your home means that you’ve got a straddle the fine line between practicality and aesthetics.
