To help make the big move easier, here are the top four things to consider before moving house:
Where you want to live
This might seem obvious, but it’s nonetheless important. When you want to move house, think about if you want to stay in the same area or if you want to move further away.
The location will depend on your job, your kid’s school and the area that you can see yourself in for years to come. If you’re comfortable in the location you are currently in and just need more space, have a look online at the prices and if it’s something that’s possible.
Often, young couples will be living in an apartment building renting and then realize that houses aren’t affordable in that area – resulting in them having to move outside of it. But if you want to stay within a certain distance of family friends, compromising on the size might need to be done.
How much you want to spend
Many people will often start their house hunt looking at properties that are way out of their price range. And although this is fun, it could set false expectations for you about what you can realistically afford.
By scouting different real estate websites, you will be able to search for terms such as ‘condominiums near me’, ‘houses for sale nearby’ etc. which will lead you in the right direction. You can then filter the results based on your maximum budget, the number of rooms you want and the location.
What amenities are nearby
Often, people will put this at the forefront of their search – especially if they have young children or are living in a couple. Whilst searching, think about what amenities you want nearby.
Whether you love to go to the cinema, out for nice meals, shopping until you drop or you’re looking for family-friendly attractions, it’s a good idea to check out the area before purchasing a property within it. You might find that after visiting it and researching it, your dream location is no longer at the top of the list!
Will you have to buy new furniture?
If you’re used to living in an apartment, a condo or a small house, you might need to purchase new furniture for your move. If you are upsizing, you will need to consider budgeting for new furniture – as you will now have more space to fill. Think about it, even if you have all of the essential pieces of furniture, once you move into your new house, they might get lost in the space. Plus, it’s always nice to upgrade certain pieces to fit the new interior!
