Hi everyone! Today is all about cake.cake.cake! And more specifically, wedding cake… because who does not set their eye on the prize the moment they walk in to a wedding reception, counting down the minutes till they sink their teeth into a way-too-skinny-but-oh-so-good piece of wedding cake?!
So, here’s a little background and a few reasons we are talking about cake:
1. Our first anniversary is only weeks away, which means we will get to dig into that scruptious top layer oh-so-soon! I can’t wait!
2. Whenever I am thinking of things to write about, I think back to the blog’s origin – weddings and life as newleyweds – and always find my inspiration. I guess I was hungry when I thought about it this morning!
3. Earlier this week I had a meeting with our ad agency, and as we waited to begin, we got on the topic of wedding cakes, flavors and trials. It took me back to my glory days.
So, incase you haven’t checked out pictures from our wedding here or here, I’ll give you a little “taste” of what our cake was like in the slideshow below. We were so blessed that my Aunt Brenda, a fabulous cake maker, offered to make our cake! WHAT! I mean, huge burden lifted off of us, but it was just as much fun! She even baked us different cakes with frostings and fillings so we could have a cake tasting! We ended up with a heavenly lemon cake with raspberry filling, and an almond fondant with buttercream. Mouth is watering… now. Side note: I have a weird affinity for fondant, so that was a must-have for any of you buttercream-loving-naysayers out there!
So, behold, my aunt’s beautiful work!
While I’d like to say I came up with the design of our cake in my pretty little head, I had some help. Here are some other cakes I really like, and that were actually the inspiration behind our cake; most of them were found on Pinterest!
I did know a few things I wanted though:
- Square cake
- Tiered, but not huge
- Flowers cascading down
- FONDANT!
- Unique
- Delicious!
So, with those criteria and the Pin-spirational pictures above, I let me aunt do her thing, and I can honestly say we were so much more happy with our cake than you probably should be.
When going into researching, dreaming and deciding on your wedding cake, there are so many things to take into account. You think about your dream look and taste of course, but another important factor for most people can be budget. I mean, these little boogers can get up to $7 a slice!!! Not to mention, a lot of venues and/or bakers will charge a cutting fee… I mean, it can really get up there in price. You also have to consider whether or not you want a groom’s cake. And heck, maybe you want to be unconventional and do cupcakes or a dessert bar instead. The possibilities are endless!
What’s your favorite kind of wedding cake, or for my married friends, what were your requirements and no-nos when it came to cake? Are you a fondant lover or hater? Ever had a really good cake/filling combo? I’m getting hungry over here (ignore the fact that it’s 9 a.m.), so can’t wait to hear from you all!
XO,
Amanda

March 5, 2013 at 12:44 amI loved my wedding cake! I made sure that I stood by my fairytale theme. The side of the cake was written in storybook script and it read, “And they lived happily ever after.”
